Definitions

             

* Note: Saxifraga means rock breaker, since these plants were thought to break the rocks upon which they grew. Highly variable.  Additional common name: hawkweed-leaved saxifrage.

* Stem: Sturdy, 12" to 20", stiff with hairs, leafless, single, straight, can be branched.

* Flower: 1/8" to 3/8" odd-colored flowers, green to purplish brown, oblong-triangular petals, 5 triangular green sepals in dense cluster along upper stem, looks rusty colored hence common name.

* Leaves: Basal loose rosette, oblong, slightly wavy edges, on stalks, thick, green and smooth above, below slightly reddish.

* Habitat: Moist places, wet tundra, meadow, alpine snow flushes, throughout the Yukon and the mountains of central and northern Alaska.
