Worldwide the purslane family is considered small as it is concentrated in North and South America.  The plants are small.  Flowers have 2 greenish sepals, 4-6 petals that are fused at their base, and 4-6 stamens.  The leaves are smooth, toothless, fleshy and undivided.  Their habitat is damp places.
