The phlox family flowers are symmetrical often wheel shaped with 5 united sepals spreading into 5 lobes.  5 united, rounded petals form a tube and 5 stamens of unequal heights.  Ovary has 3 parts.  Leaves may be pinnately divided, alternate, untoothed.
