The iris family occurs worldwide.  Most come from rhizomes, bulbs, or corms and have one or more stems.  the leaves are usually basal, overlap in 2 ranks and are grass-like with parallel veins.  The flowers are usually showy and have 2 leaf-like bracts.  The single ovary produces a 3 chambered capsule that splits into 3 segments with many seeds.
