The diapensia family is related to the heath family and only has one representative in Alaska.  They are low evergreen shrubs with small alternate leaves crowded together.  Flowers have 5 united lobes, 5 stamens, 5 sepals, and the ovary is divided into 3 parts.  Found in alpine habitat.
