These plants are considered weedy.  Leaves are usually alternate or opposite and shaped somewhat like a goose foot.  The inconspicuous flowers grow in dense clusters that form a spike.  5 sepals, no petals, 5 stamens, 1 ovary.  They usually grow in alkaline soils.
