The pink family is occasionally referred to as the carnation family.  Flowers have 5 sepals, 5 rounded petals that are united, 10 stamens and a 5-parted ovary.  The leaves are unbranched and undivided, are opposite on the stem and are swollen at the joints.  This characteristic distinguishes this family.
